Mommy Makeover Fort Worth

A mommy makeover in Fort Worth is a personalized combination of procedures that are designed to reverse changes to your body caused by pregnancy. Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Emily J. Kirby can perform any of the following breast and body contouring procedures as part of mommy makeover surgery in Fort Worth:

Body contouring surgeries included in a mommy makeover

Your abdomen grows as your baby grows during pregnancy, which results in the weakening and separation of your abdominal wall muscles. Stretching of the abdominal skin may cause its collagen fibers to break, which results in “stretch marks.” A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) tightens the deep abdominal muscles and removes excess skin and soft tissues in order to help restore your pre-pregnancy figure.

Also, localized fat deposits may persist after pregnancy for many patients; liposuction can be performed to slim and reshape the body.

Breast procedures included in mommy makeover surgery

Whether you breastfed your children or not, pregnancy can cause dramatic changes to your breasts. Many women are left with stretched, saggy breasts after pregnancy, and long for the larger breasts they enjoyed during pregnancy. A breast augmentation, breast lift, or a combination of the two can help lift and restore your youthful, perky look.

Fat transfer breast augmentation is also a breast procedure option. This technique uses liposuction to remove fat from another area of the body to help lift, shape, and enhance the breast without implants for a rejuvenated appearance.

Liposuction is often used around the breast area to address “bra bulges” to further refine your breast appearance.

Breast implant options

We offer the latest and safest breast implants on the market, and Dr. Kirby will help you select the ideal breast implant to achieve the breast appearance you desire.

Will my breast implants look natural if I gain or lose weight?

As many of us have noticed, gaining and losing weight is often noticed first in the breasts. Gaining or losing as little as five to ten pounds can change the appearance of the breasts dramatically. Significant amounts of weight loss change the skin and soft tissues often changing the appearance noticeably. Many women in these situations desire surgery once they reach their goal weight. It is best to be within five to ten pounds of your goal weight for at least three months before undergoing surgery.

Mommy makeover surgery is a highly individualized procedure. You may be a candidate for a mommy makeover if:

  • Combined surgical procedures: combining surgical procedures into a single surgical session also has the benefit of giving you one consolidated recovery period.

How do I prepare for mommy makeover surgery?

In preparation for your mommy makeover surgery, you will need to spend time thinking about some important topics.

  • Do you plan to become pregnant again in the future? If so, you will want to wait to have a tummy tuck until you are finished having children. Muscles that are tightened during a tummy tuck will be re-stretched during later pregnancies.
  • Are you at a stable goal weight? If you plan to continue losing weight, it is best to do so with diet and exercise before having surgery. You will have better results if you are at your goal weight prior to surgery. Liposuction is not a weight loss solution; however, it can help contour your shape for a smoother silhouette.
  • Are you still breastfeeding? If so, you should wait until after you are no longer nursing to have any breast surgery. The risk of bleeding and infection is increased in actively breastfeeding women.

Prior to any procedure, it is necessary to review the medications you are taking that may affect your surgery. You may be asked to stop or adjust some medications you are on. As always, it is important to include supplements on your list of medications. Aspirin and aspirin products (Alka-Seltzer®, Carisoprodol, Excedrin®, Goody’s®, Midol®), anti-inflammatory medications (except acetaminophen, or Tylenol®), and herbal supplements must be avoided for 10 days prior to your mommy makeover.

Learn more about which medications and supplements to avoid. Dr. Kirby will discuss your medications with you.

Depending on your medical condition, you may be asked to get lab testing or a medical checkup prior to your mommy makeover. You may also be asked to have an updated mammogram prior to your surgery if you have not had one recently. Tobacco products impair your body’s ability to heal. You will be asked to stop smoking for 6 weeks prior to any surgery. Tobacco step-down products such as chewing gum and Nicoderm® continue to provide your body with tobacco and must be stopped as well. Please ask Dr. Kirby if you will need assistance with quitting.

Be sure to arrange for a responsible adult to drive you to and from your mommy makeover. You will need someone to stay with you the night following your surgery as well. You will receive specific instructions for your surgery day from Dr. Kirby’s patient care staff.

What is my recovery from mommy makeover surgery like?

Your recovery from mommy makeover surgery depends on your personalized mommy makeover plan. Some basic precautions and instructions include:

  • Arrange for someone to help you get around the house and help you with your medication for at least the first 24 hours after your makeover. You may need pain medication and anti-nausea medication.
  • Try sleeping on several pillows on your back and keep your legs slightly bent at the hips to reduce tension on your abdominal incision, reduce pain, and result in a thinner scar.
  • Do not lift anything over 5 pounds, and avoid contact sports and jogging for up to six weeks.
  • Call Dr. Kirby immediately if you notice an increase in swelling, pain, redness, drainage, or bleeding in the surgical area, or if you develop fever, dizziness, nausea, or vomiting. Other red flags include shortness of breath, chest pains, and unusual heartbeat.

Dr. Kirby may ask you to wear a surgical bra after breast surgery to help lift and support your breasts. This will also help minimize swelling. Most swelling should improve within a few weeks, although some swelling may last for up to four months after breast reduction surgery. You will need to wear an abdominal binder after your tummy tuck surgery. You can shower after all of the dressings are removed. This usually occurs within 72 hours of your mommy makeover. After showering, pat your incisions dry and replace your abdominal binder. Swelling should improve within five weeks, and the results are apparent within three months. Dr. Kirby will discuss massage techniques when the timing is appropriate.

Expect Minimal Downtime, Thanks to ERAS

Dr. Emily Kirby uses Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols, also known as “multimodal analgesia,” to minimize recovery time, and we see real results: our patients experience less nausea and feel more alert, mobile, and comfortable after their procedures..

“I had very hard recoveries in the past…it took me weeks to get back to caring for my family. With Dr. Kirby, I had a wonderful recovery and was back to my activities surprisingly quickly. Don’t tell the doctor, but I was at my child’s sporting event the day after my surgery, and I felt great!”

What results should I expect after a mommy makeover in Fort Worth?

The final results of a mommy makeover may not be apparent for several months after surgery. Over time, the implants will settle, and the scar lines on the under or the breast will improve, although they’ll never disappear completely. Following Dr. Kirby’s instructions is key to the success of your mommy makeover. It is important that the surgical incisions are not subjected to excessive force, abrasion, or motion during the time of healing.
