Large Breast Size

For women, large breasts can lead to severe back pain and other physical symptoms, as well as emotional distress. For men, excess breast tissue can impair confidence when shirtless.

If you are experiencing discomfort or self-consciousness due to large breasts, Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Emily Kirby offers breast reduction tailored for both men and women. Below is an overview to help you get a head start before your plastic surgery consultation.

Causes of large breast size

Women

In women, breast size is typically determined by genetics, hormonal changes, and body weight. During puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, hormonal fluctuations can significantly affect breast size. Additionally, weight gain can lead to an increase in breast tissue, as breasts are partially composed of fatty tissue.

Men

For men, enlarged breasts (gynecomastia) can be caused by hormonal imbalances, medication side effects, or certain health conditions. This condition can also be genetic. While true gynecomastia means that the fibrous, glandular breast tissue is larger than normal, some men simply have a small amount of fat contributing to the appearance of gynecomastia.

Procedures to reduce breast size

Breast reduction for women

Breast reduction surgery, or reduction mammoplasty, is designed to alleviate the discomfort associated with overly large breasts. This procedure involves the removal of excess breast tissue, fat, and skin, aiming to achieve a breast size in proportion with your body. It can also alleviate physical symptoms such as back and neck pain, skin irritation, and posture problems. The surgery typically results in a more comfortable breast size, and it can significantly enhance quality of life.

Male breast reduction (Gynecomastia surgery)

Male breast reduction surgery addresses gynecomastia by removing excess fat and/or glandular tissue for a flatter, more masculine chest contour. Dr. Kirby will adjust the plan depending on the extent and cause of gynecomastia, so surgery may involve liposuction, direct excision of excess tissue, or a combination of both. Sometimes a ‘puffy nipple’ appearance requires yet another approach. This surgery improves physical appearance, and often has the secondary result of boosting self-confidence and comfort, especially in social or intimate situations.
