Breast Asymmetry (Uneven Breasts)

Breast asymmetry, or uneven breasts, is a common concern for many women that female plastic surgeon Dr. Emily Kirby sees here in Fort Worth. It involves a noticeable difference in the size, shape, or position of one breast compared to the other. While it is normal to have slight differences between breasts, significant asymmetry can affect clothing fit and  confidence during intimacy. Below we explain the types of asymmetry and procedures Dr. Kirby may recommend to address them.

Types of breast asymmetry

Breast asymmetry manifests in various forms, and understanding these helps us identify the most suitable corrective procedure.

Breast size

The most common type of asymmetry is size, where one breast is larger or smaller than the other.

Breast shape

Differences in shape, such as one breast being rounder or flatter than the other, are another form of asymmetry. Sometimes differences in breast shape are due to an underlying chest asymmetry, which can range from mild rib differences to pectus excavatum or pectus carinatum, more dramatic chest wall shapes.

Nipple size or position

Asymmetry can also occur in the nipples, with differences in size or position. One nipple might be higher, lower, or differently sized compared to the other, impacting the overall appearance of symmetry. Some patients have inverted nipples or larger, more prominent nipples that are bothersome.

Breast procedures

Several surgical options are available to create an even, proportional breast appearance.

Breast implants to increase size

For size-related asymmetry, breast implants are often an effective solution. Different sizes of implants can be used for each breast to achieve balance. Breast implants are available in a wide range of sizes, from as small as 110 cc (a little more than the volume in a “pup cup” at Starbucks) to as large as 800 cc (just over the volume of a venti iced latte). Saline implants can be filled a bit larger, if necessary. Learn more about breast implant options »

Breast fat transfer to increase size

Fat transfer, also known as autologous fat grafting to the breasts, is a natural approach to correcting mild asymmetry of about 1 cup size or less. It involves transferring fat from another part of your body to your breasts. This method is ideal for those seeking a modest increase in size and a more natural look and feel.

Breast lift to reshape or reposition breasts & nipples

A breast lift, or mastopexy, is an option for those with asymmetry in the position or size of the nipple-areola complex. A breast lift adjusts breast position, modifying where the breast mound or “footprint” sits on the chest. A lift can be combined with breast implants or fat transfer for comprehensive results, as needed.

Breast reduction

A breast reduction removes excess skin, breast tissue, and fat to reveal a breast shape and size that is lifted, supported, and a more appropriate size for your frame. For patients who desire a reduction in one or both breasts, but also have asymmetry in size or nipple position, this procedure can provide both symmetry and a reduction.
